David’s case was quite a challenge. His bite and teeth had collapsed to such an extent that it had actually affected his facial profile. His face appeared caved-in and made him appear older and beyond his actual years. David was not confident about his smile, with missing and malpositioned teeth when he smiled. Coupled with pain and repeated infections, he decided it was time to seek help. His thorough research confirmed that he had to see a prosthodontist. He learned that a Prosthodontist is a dentist who has received two to three years of additional training and has been trained to open a collapsed bite without causing harm to jaws and muscles. David had also learned that if the bite is not controlled properly it can result in an even more complicated solution. To complicate matters further David had moderate financial restraints and needed help to “kick start” his new life without dentures. David wanted a fresh start as his wife had recently passed.
There are many solutions for the total reconstruction of the severely damaged dentition. The All-On-4 techniques, where only four (4) strategically placed long implants are used in each jaw can routinely and predictably help with such reconstructions. Using only four (4) implants per jaw helps keep costs down. The other way we were able to help David financially was with the selection of the material used for the teeth and gums. A novel technique that combines artistry and CAD CAM technology developed only at ArtLab Dentistry was used to fabricate computer designed acrylic resin teeth bonded to a customized titanium framework. This technique has been shown in laboratory studies to be much stronger that the more traditional technique where plastic denture teeth are used.
Although both jaws received CAD CAM milled acrylic resin teeth on titanium frameworks, David was warned that based on an excellent study by Drs. Davis, Watson, and Packer at Kings College London University acrylic resin teeth in the upper anterior (front) teeth region have a higher chance of fracture than ceramic teeth. David was willing to take this chance with possible higher failure rates in this area of the mouth, as ArtLab Dentistry provided him with our standard 5-year warranty. This, coupled with a specially designed night guard to protect the teeth gave David the confidence to select an affordable treatment option and avoid dentures altogether.
